Holy’s Bakery was established in 1932 by Yoshio and Miyako Hori. Yoshio was born in Honolulu in 1903 but returned home to Hiroshima, Japan with his family where he was raised. When Yoshio was a teenager the family moved back to Hawai‘i, settling in North Kohala where he met his wife Miyako Yanagida and together they founded our family bakery.
The bakery’s name came to be when a sign maker misheard the
name “Hori” (sounding like Holee) for “Holy” and the name just stuck.
Holy's Bakery began by baking and supplying fresh breads, pastries and doughnuts to the plantation workers and residents of North Kohala. The introduction and creation of the now famous pies was Margaret’s (daughter of Yoshio & Miyako) idea.
The frozen, buttered pies quickly gained popularity and have become a fan favorite across the islands. Over the years our pies have been voted one of the best in Hawai'i by keeping the original taste and crust we all know and love.
Our family recipes have remained the same for the past four generations and each pie continues to be handmade with love to this very day. The Holy’s Bakery legacy and the production of its famous pies continues to live on thanks to, Margaret Hori along with her niece, Jana Kaholoa’a & family.
